POP STAR MAG INTERVIEW

(i didn't interview him cuz i don't work 4 popstar mag but it would be cool to)

Popstar:When did you get into martial arts? Ryan: I would watch Ninja Turles and power rangers and wanted to do the same things they were doing. When I got older my mom let me go to some karate classes and I liked it and i've been doing it ever since.

Did you get serious about it fast? It took me a couple years to realize it was more then just kicking and punching.

What are national competitions like? Huge, crowded and nerve wracking-but it's the best part. There's so many emotions going on there. For some people, Karate is there lives.

How many tournaments have you won? Um...a lot.[laughs] The first time I won was my first tournament it was very exciting. I went to have fun but kept winning and winning and winning and wound up in first place.

Don't you get hurt? I don't fight anymore, but you have to take the chance that you'll get hurt.

Are you a show-off? I like the attention but i don't classify myself as a show-off. I like to stay modest and low-key.

How did you get on Punk'd? I did an ABC pilot show called GO SICK- it ws a hidden-camera show were I play an annoying eight year old kid and MTV saw that. They called and asked if i'd do punk'd and i was like, "Yeah, definetly!"

Are the stars always cool with it once the pranks are revealed? Uhhh...there's always the five percent who aren't too happy. I don't think we;ve ever had one person who really found out and went along with it- some of them say they did, but I think they just didn't want to say they got punk'd.

How is Ashton? Ashton is great-he's a very nice guy and he always gets straight to business and that's the way I like it. Some people think he's not nice because he is so famous, but he really is just how he is on the show-he's awesome to work with.

What did you love most about Punk'd?Just meeting everyone and haveing n extended family with the show.

I know the answer to this because you told me...but who is your celebrity crush? Hilary Duff!...I can't say it's her personality because I never met her, but she is so cute. And she's really funny on TV. I'd love to meet her.

NOOOO RYAN HILARY DUFF U DO KNO THAT I AM STILL HERE AND SINGLE IF U NEED ME LOL JK I AM SINGLE BUT LOL NE WAY BE SURE TO PICK UP POPSTAR MAG AND READ THE REST.

THIS IS ANOTHER INTERVIEW WITH I DUNNO BUT IT'S ABOUT RYAN

RYAN PINKSTON

So what's it like to work with Ashton Kutcher?
Ashton's a great guy. He's like a big brother to me. It's great; I wouldn't have picked anyone else to work with.

Does a lot of strange stuff happen behind the scenes with Ashton Kutcher on "Punk'd?"
(Laughing) He's a strange guy, there's a lot of strange stuff [that goes on]. He's a great guy and very good. Like you see him on TV is the way he is in real life.

Have you been punked?
No, it's kind of hard to punk whoever is on the show. We know what everyone looks like and we know the gags. It's kind of hard.

That must mean the crew has never managed to punk Ashton.
We've tried, believe me, we've tried a lot of times. It's just got to be something so outrageous that he wouldn't have time to think about it. We'd have to jump him in his house at like 3 in the morning with guns or something like that.

What's next for you?
We've just signed up for another season of "Punk'd." But I'm working on a movie right now called "Soul Plane" with Tom Arnold, Method Man and Snoop Dogg. It's so much fun. That's why I'm out here tonight. I actually live in Maryland so being here is just great.

What's Tom Arnold like to work with?
Tom Arnold's great. He's like a dad. He's very protective of me. He plays my dad in the movie.

What's "Soul Plane" about?
Basically what happens is this guy sues an airline because they treated him bad - and they killed his dog. He's going to end up with a big amount of money out of the settlement and finally decides to open up his own airline. It's called N.W.A.; it's an urban airline. We end up being the only white family on the plane. It's crazy but it's fun.

Working with Snoop Dogg and Method Man must be interesting.
They are funny, they are so great. It's all fun and games, but it's work too.

On MTV's Punk'd, pint-size actor Ryan Pinkston, 15, has made a name for himself by sullying those of fellow celebrities.

Ryan Pinkston, 15, has gained fame by insulting celebrities on MTV's Punk'd.

The hidden-camera show, which is now in re-runs, stars Ashton Kutcher and his band of merry troublemakers. That includes Pinkston, who poses as a cub reporter from a fictional kids' TV show, attends red-carpet events in L.A. and accosts unsuspecting stars such as Denise Richards, Tori Amos and Pierce Brosnan.

Punk'd has been picked up for 20 more episodes beginning this fall, with a huge pay raise for Kutcher. But Pinkston probably won't be returning to the show that put him in the spotlight.

"Honestly, I don't think I'll be able to do it much longer, because I'm being recognized now," he says.

Not that it matters. The black belt karate-champion-turned-actor has quickly become one of the most sought-after child actors in Hollywood.

Last month, MTV signed Pinkston to a development deal that gives him his own show on the network.

And he makes his big-screen debut July 25 in Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, playing a martial arts expert. On Friday, he starts shooting Soul Plane, an urban version of Airplane! starring rapper Snoop Dogg and Tom Arnold. He'll be all over TV this week promoting Spy Kids, including Late Show With David Letterman today, Last Call With Carson Daly Wednesday and Live with Regis and Kelly on Thursday.

Despite his recent fame, Pinkston would prefer to remain a regular teenager with hometown friends.

"Don't get me wrong: I love attention," Pinkston says. "I just don't like being pointed out, especially in front of my friends."

Then again, his classmates don't work for MTV or pal around with Kutcher, the current "it" male star in Hollywood.

"(Kutcher) is sooo cool. He's like a big brother. He treats me like an adult," Pinkston says. He says he never saw Ashton's new girlfriend, Demi Moore, on the set. "I haven't seen him since they started going out. But I did meet (Ashton's ex) Brittany Murphy. She was really cool."

He also has met some less famous celebrities through his Punk'd routine.

"Pauly Shore came up to me (on the red carpet) and I said, 'Hey, what happened?' He said, 'What do you mean?' And I said, 'To your career,' " Pinkston says, recounting one of his favorite Punk'd stunts. "(Shore) walked away. But 20 minutes and 40 martinis later, he came back and called me a (expletive) and was yelling at me. I was just cracking up. In a way I deserved it, but it was all in good fun."

Pinkston says he was shocked when MTV approached him with the idea for his own show.

"They were like, 'Here's 30 minutes. Do whatever you want.' " Pinkston and his karate-school buddies are brainstorming ideas for the pilot, which will be shot in August. "What are we doing? I guess we should start working on it. It will definitely be a reality show."

Pinkston's first love remains martial arts. The native of Highland, Md., began karate at age 4. He is ranked No. 2 in the world in his age group.

He jumped to acting in 2000, when his mom signed him up for Ed McMahon's Next Big Star Internet talent contest. Ryan won with his karate dance routine. That led to an ABC hidden-camera pilot (it wasn't picked up). Then came MTV.

At 4-foot-8 and 100 pounds, the teen actor could easily pass for a 9-year-old. "It's definitely an advantage. I can play younger roles. I understand the (adult) jokes. I can work longer hours under (Screen Actors Guild) rules."

Spy Kids director Robert Rodriguez is a Pinkston fan. "I picked Ryan to play the part because of his martial arts abilities and his generous spirit. He is comfortable with himself, so he's a natural actor and has amazing physical control."

Pinkston says he's determined to stay grounded and not fall into the "child actor" trap. He still lives in rural Maryland, juggling karate, acting and a 3.5 GPA at River Hill High School, where he'll be a sophomore in the fall.

He hopes eventually to start Pinkston Productions with his brother, Aaron, 20, a film production student at the University of North Carolina.

Fame does have its perks. "When I was a freshman (this past spring), this senior girl invited me to her prom. She dumped her boyfriend the day before the prom to go with me," he says. They are no longer dating. "I don't really have time to date. No girlfriend, just a dog," a 98-pound Weimaraner named Cody.

The most annoying part about being recognized? "People come up to me and say 'You just got punk'd,' " the show's catchphrase. "I just look at them and say, 'Yeah, that's real original.' "

Competitor Profile on Ryan Pinkston
By Mark Huard

Ryan Pinkston is a 14 year old 9th grader from Highland, Maryland. He has been involved with the martial arts for over nine years, more than half his life. As long as he could remember, he has always wanted to do karate and has excelled ever since the first days of classes. Ryan is currently working towards his 2nd degree Black Belt. He trained for seven years with mentor, and world champion Willie the Bam Johnson. From the very beginning, Ryan would love to go to the NASKA Tournaments and watch Mr. Johnson and other great performers on stage at the night time super shows. His dream of course, was to some day follow in their footsteps.

After seven years of Kung Fu, Ryan began training in Tae Kwon Do at the Charlie Lee Karate School in Herndon, Virginia. He is now a very dedicated student of Mr. Dave Moss and Charlie Lee. Ryan is also a member of the Charlie Lee Karate National Demo Team. When we first joined the school other parents found out that we would travel almost 90 miles round trip to train at Charlie Lee Karate, they use to tell us how crazy we are, but we knew a lot of the Charlie Lee Team from traveling (on the NASKA Circuit) and loved the family atmosphere we always observed with them. We also knew their reputation and knew the kids would be getting the best training possible. Once you get to this level of training, convenience is not priority. We, after two years, wouldnt have it any other way.

This is Ryans 4th year on the NASKA Circuit and he is ranked in the top 3 among the 14-15 year old Black Belt Boys, in all five of the divisions he competes in. Last season he finished in the top two spots in all of his divisions, for the 12-13 Black Belt Boys. After spending time with his coach Dave Moss, Ryan perfected his traditional forms and finished #1 in the division going undefeated for 11 tournaments. He was also the National Champion in NASKA for all 12-13 boys/girls forms. Aside from attending regular classes, he takes private gymnastics classes and religiously practices a minimum of 15 hours a week for his competitions.

Competing individually just was not enough for Ryan. He wanted to find someone to be his partner and do team forms. After seeing him in the nighttime finals show at the Battle of Atlanta, Ryan asked Anthony Atkins (#1 in Mens forms for three years) to be his partner. To his surprise, Atkins said sure. This was going to be quite a challenge since Ryan lives in Maryland and Anthony lives in Alabama. In 1999, their first year competing, was a trial year for Ryan and Anthony, better known as Team Air many times that year they placed second, non only to their teammates at Charlie Lee Karate. The year 2000 was theirs all the way. With the new rating system in NASKA for team forms, Team Air was ranked #1 in the Synchronized Forms Division. The tricks and flips they perform on stage are hard to put in words, but to see them do it in synchronized fashion is truly amazing. They finished #1 again in 2001 and looks like they are on their way to a threepart for 2002. One of their proudest moments doing team forms was at a NASKA Tournament in 2001 when a judge came up to them and said I have never in all my years of martial arts seen two individuals perform and look like one. That night they received 4 perfect 10s out of 5 judges.

Because of their success in teams and individual ranking Ryan and Anthony have been invited to perform and hold seminars all over the world. The past year included two trips to Paris France, (Where they performed at the Bercy for over 20,000 spectators, Guatemala (one week after Sept 11th) where Ryan achieved six first places and a grand, and Quebec City Canada where Ryan won two grands.

But through all of his traveling one of Ryans most memorable moments was a seminar that Anthony and he both put on in Maine for students at Huards Martial Arts School and the Huards Sport Karate Team. This was one of the greatest sport karate seminars ever put on in the state of Maine says Mark Huard These two individuals really are a class act.

Ryan has had some really great years and thanks to people like Jenny Jones and Ed McMahon things look really bright for his acting career.

Ryan won the www.nextbigstar.com Ed McMahons international star search gone internet. After viewing Ryans video professional judges choose him as one of the finalist. He was listed in the kids dance division (doing a musical form) and 12 weeks after the contest started Ryan received a phone call from McMahon while he was in Disney World performing for ESPN 2 at the ISKA Martial Arts Championships, informing him that he was the winner. Ryan won over .00 worth of prizes that included a Gateway computer system, furniture, hotel stays and gift certificates. This was the beginning for Ryan. Soon after he received a call from the Jenny Jones Show inviting him to perform on their Most Talented Kids Show Ryan performed and it was a huge hit! He has also been featured on ABC Sports/Washington DC (filmed at the Charlie Lee Karate School.Good Day Philadelphia in Pennsylvania and Grant Paulsen radio show, a XM station, just to name a few.

This year Ryan has gone beyond his performing with just martial arts. He acquired a talent agency in Los Angeles and spent two weeks out in Hollywood during pilot season. In the short time he was there, he auditioned for 7 pilots (five of which will air this fall) was on hold for a commercial and landed a pilot for ABC. The last word was that it will air mid-late season.

Through everything he has done in such a short period, Ryan has managed to stay grounded. Most of his friends at school didn't even know about much of his successes until the principal plays the Jenny Jones show during the morning announcements, or the school newsletter announces Ed McMahon winner. When asked how he feels about all of his accomplishments, Ryan replied this has been so much fun! I have accomplished so much more than I expected. I guess the hard work is paying off. And although Ryans acting endeavors do not include martial arts physically, he knows that his years of training has given him the ability, patience, and confidence required to do all of this.

RYAN IS A GREAT EXAMPLE FOR ALL UPCOMING MARTIAL ARTISTS. HE IS A VERY POLITE SPOKEN YOUNG MAN, WITH GREAT TRAITS AND A LOT OF SUPERIOR TALENT.SAYS REPORTER MARK HUARD.
